Captain Swanson was a member of Troop B, 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. On February 26, 1971, he was the pilot of a Hughes Loach Observation Helicopter (OH-6A) providing close air support to an ambushed South Vietnamese Army convoy in Kampong Cham Province, Cambodia. While making a low pass the aircraft came under fire of two enemy machine guns and crashed. His remains were recovered on September 21, 1995 and identified on February 7, 2002. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial. Captain Swanson was awarded the Medal of Honor.
