Thomas Was born 1760 in Sutherland shire Scotland, on the estate of the Earl of Angus.
Left Scotland on 15 August 1772 and landed at Philadelphia 7 October 1772
he made the voyage with others of his countrymen also accompanying them was his uncle William McCoy and his wife and children, Angus Sutherland, his wife and their seven children.

Joined the Main Army of General Washington April 1782 at Washington, Pennsylvania.Served under Capt. Swearingen,Builderback, Shannon, Major Scott, Cols McClelan, Crawford, Williamson and Gibson.

In battle of Sandusky on June 4-5,1782 in a 2-day battle 3 miles northeast of Upper Sandusky, a Patriot militia, commanded by Maj. William Crawford, force attacked a group of rangers and Indians. The militia appeared to be winning the battle when British reinforcements arrived. Casualties were light on both sides, but Crawford was taken prisoner and killed by the Indians.

He was seriously wounded by a saber thrust through the body, and was taken prisoner and carried to Halifax. At the close of the war he returned home. He married Dec 20th 1787 and Alexander and his Wife settled in Wyoming Valley,Washington,Pennsylvania. Later they moved to South Ripley, Mason, Kentucky, where there first children were born , then they bought a farm in Brown county, Ohio near Ripley and Georgetown.

In 1806 Alexander was an Elder in Red Oak Presbyterian Church, Ripley, Ohio.

Alexander McCoy came to America in 1772 with his uncle William McCoy. He may have come with his brother Thomas, but they are two different people. Documented in the book William McCoy and his descendants by Lycurgus McCoy. William McCoy also had a son named Alexander born 1753. Both men named Alexander came to America on the same ship - one married Nancy Campbell and one married Francis Katherine Sutherland.
