Walter Edward Baer, 87 of Canby passed away Thursday, Sept. 22, 2005, at Sioux Valley Canby Campus Hospital in Canby.
Funeral Services were held Monday, Sept. 26, at Nicolai Lutheran Church in Canby with Rev. Scott Muchlberg officiating. Burial was at Canby City Cemetery.
Walter Edward Baer was born Oct. 2, 1917, to Otto and Emma (Loeck)Baer in Balaton. He was baptized in Balaton and confirmed at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Gary, S.D. He served his country in the US Navy during WW11 from Jan. 19, 1942 until Oct. 16, 1945.
On June 8, 1947, he was united in marriage to Edna (Zachow) Baer in Gaylord. Following their marriage, they moved to Canby.
Baer worked bridge construction for the Wendtland Bridge Construction out of Balaton and retired from there in 1986. He was a member of Nicolai Lutheran Church in Canby and was a member of Gary Legion for 30 years and was a lifetime member of the Canby VFW. He enjoyed having coffee with his friends at the Canby Coop. He also enjoyed reading westerns, restoring antiques, and some wood working.
He is survived by his wife, Edna of Canby, two sons, Michael (Joyce)Baer of Canby, Jerry Baer of Canby; three daughters, Sharon Baer of Minnetonka, Kathy (Doug)VanSanten of Brandon,SD, Bonnie (Paul)Olson of Porter, three grandchildren, Britiany VanSanten, Justin VanSanten, Heather Olson, four step-grandchildren, Aaron (Chrissi)Olson, Ryan (Tanya)Olson, Wayne Olson, Tanya Larson; five step great-grandchildren; two brothers, Arnold (Eldeen)Baer of Canby, Erwin (Fae)Baer of Canby, a sister in law Gertrude Baer of Gary, SD and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Leona and his brother, Rudolph.
