Senior Master Sergeant Stickney was a member of 61st Troop Carrier Squadron. On May 31, 1966, he was a crew member of a Lockheed Hercules Transport (C-130E) with a mission of placing a floating bomb on the Song Ma River that would detonate as it passed under the Ham Ron Bridge in North Vietnam. As the bombing run was being made, the aircraft was hit by anti-aircraft fire and crashed. His remains were recovered on January 16, 1998 and identified on February 10, 2004. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial
