Virginia E. "Ginger" (Bailey) Blanchette, 87, wife of the late Jean M. Blanchette, died Saturday at The Clipper Home in Westerly.
Born in Woonsocket on Jan. 11, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Leon and Jennie (Pratt) Bailey. Ginger was very proud of her work during World War II at the United States Rubber Co. in Woonsocket, where she worked in the manufacture of the barrage balloons that helped defend London against air attacks.
She and her husband moved to Cemetery Lane in Ashaway in 1961, where they remained for more than 40 years. She was predeceased by her son, Jay, in 1988; her sisters, Gladys, Iris, Donna and Marion; and her brothers, Kenny and Charlie.
Ginger loved bowling, dancing, sing-a-longs, the Red Sox, Sunday afternoon cookouts, and visiting, over coffee, with her friends and family at her kitchen table. She leaves her sons, Bailey and his wife Cheryl of Lake Mary, Fla., Brian and his wife, Carol, of Richmond, and Jacques of Westerly; her daughter, Jill Blanchette and her husband, Rob Russell, of Westerly; her daughter-in-law, Stephanie Blanchette of Westerly; her sisters, Thelma Steffancci of Woonsocket and Shirley Kenny of Pensacola, Fla.; her grandchildren, Gerry and his wife, Pam, of Milford, Mass., Joe and his wife, Kristin, of Bar Harbor, Maine, Kenny of Gainesville, Fla., Geoffrey and Jack, both of Richmond; Aimee of Westerly, and Harvey and his wife, Cate, of Westerly; her greatgrandson Logan of Bar Harbor; and many nieces and nephews.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Salvation Army, 201 Pitman St., Providence, RI 02906. The funeral service will start from the Buckler-Johnston Funeral Home, on Thursday at noon to a graveside service at 1 p.m. in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Cemetery Lane, Ashaway.
