Samuel Glasstone, an expert on nuclear reactors, died Sunday at age 89. Glasstone was a consultant with the Atomic Energy Commission and the Department of Energy from 1946 to 1982.
He was resident consultant at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico from 1952 to 1969 and also held positions at the University of London, University of Sheffield, Princeton and the University of Oklahoma.
Glasstone, who was educated at the University of London, wrote 38 books, 16 of them on nuclear science and engineering. Among his works are "Textbook of Physical Chemistry," "Sourcebook on Atomic Energy" and "Principles of Nuclear Reactor Engineering." He also was co-author of "The Elements of Nuclear Reactor Theory."
