Esther E. Hummel, age 93, Elgin, ND, passed away on Sunday, September 28, 2014 at Jacobson Memorial Care Center, Elgin.

The Funeral Service for Esther will be on Thursday, October 2, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Elgin with Rev. Marvin Winstryg officiating. Burial will follow the service at the United Methodist Cemetery in Elgin.

Visitation will be held at the Evanson Jensen Funeral Home in Elgin on Wednesday starting at 1:00 pm and going until 7:00 pm at which time there will be a family service.

ESTHER ELIZABETH HUBER was born on January 14, 1921 in Haynes, ND to Simon and Elizabeth (Seiler) Huber. She grew up in the Haynes and Hettinger, ND areas.

Esther married Fred Hummel on October 25, 1941 in Baker, MT. Together, they farmed south of New Leipzig and Elgin, ND and moved to Elgin in 1956. Esther and Fred were also custom combiners which would involve taking them to the southern parts of the United States and then back north again. Esther worked at the Co-op Store, Busch’s Laundry, and Vossler’s Grocery Store all in Elgin. She was also the head cook at Jacobson Memorial Hospital Care Center for 27 years, as well as a cook at Dachtler’s Café. She loved to bake, try new recipes, embroider, plant a very large garden, and play cards with her friends.

Esther moved to Dakota Hills Assisted Living in 2009 and then JMHCC in January of 2014, where she passed away on Sunday, September 28, 2014.

Grateful for having shared in her life are her children, Marleen (Otto) Koepplin, Elgin, ND; Eugene ( Shirley) Hummel, Spirit Lake, ID; Joyce (Tim) Liedtke, New Leipzig, ND; and Allen (Misti) Hummel, Elgin, ND; nine grandchildren, William (Linda) Koepplin, Elgin, ND; Wade Koepplin, Elgin, ND; Melanie Hummel, Spirit Lake, ID; Melissa (Mike) Spencer, Spirit Lake, ID, Todd (Tiffany) Hummel, Rawlins, WY; Kim Sprecher, Bismarck, ND; Pat Liedtke, Bismarck, ND; Katrina Hummel (friend Mark Klein), Elgin, ND; and Sadie (Kelsey) Brackel, Elgin, ND; six great-grandchildren, Dillon Koepplin, Nick and Rochelle Hummel, Austin Biberdorf, Tristen Hummel, Natasha Spencer, and Madden Brackel (expecting baby Brackel).

Esther was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Fred; brothers, Ed Oxchner and Ervin Huber, sister, Ida Bierle; father and mother-in-law, William and Katherine (Bader) Hummel; sisters-in-law, Mildred Oxchner and Erla Devlin; granddaughter Sarah Hummel, and son-in-law Virgil Sprecher.
