William Sealey McMillan was born 1834 in Mulberry, Jackson County, GA, the son of Peter Edward McMillan and Sarah M. Kerbow McMillan.
He joined Co B 16th Regiment Georgia Infantry and was enlisted into Confederate service by Adjt Barrow at Center Hill, Jackson County, Ga. Company B was organized by Captain A. M. Reynolds and was also known as "Center Hill Guards."
William Sealey McMillan was killed September 14, 1862 during the Battle of Crampton's Gap (South Mountain) near Burkittsville, Frederick County, Md.
According to Confederate Flags in the Georgia State Capitol Collection:
"During this engagement, Sgt. (Andrew L.) Anderson of Company K 96th PA Infantry, shot color bearer William McMullin[sic] of the 16th, and captured the flag."

"....I sent during the charge, 42 prisoners to the rear, including the captain of Company G, Sixteenth Georgia, wounded, and other officers and men most of them unhurt. Sergeant (Andrew L.) Anderson, of Company K, shot the color-bearer of the Sixteenth Georgia, but did not stop to secure the colors, which were secured by some of our forces afterward."
The Captain of Co G referred to in Cake's report above is Augustus Columbus Thompson who was shot through the left hip. The ball was cut out of his left groin. Affidavit of Peter E. McMillan states that his son, William S. McMillan, "a corporal in A. M. Reynolds' Company of Jackson County Volunteers was killed 14th September 1862 awhile in line of his duty in Company B and 16th Regiment; that myself and his mother and brothers and sisters only heirs surviving him..." Address listed as Mulbry[sic], Jackson County, GA.
Capt Abner Monroe Reynolds also died of wounds received at Crampton's Gap and John M. Venable succeeded him as Captain of Company B.
According to a letter dated Camp Amos(?) near Fredericksburg March 26, 1863 "W. S. McMullin[sic] a Corporal of Capt. A. M. Reynolds Co. B 16th Georgia Regiment born in Jackson County state of Georgia (age not known) 6 foot high dark complection [sic] dark eyes dark hair by occupation when inlisted[sic] a farmer; was enlisted by Ajt Barrow at Center Hill Georgia on the 17th day of July 1861 to serve for the war and was killed in battle at Crampton's Gap Md. on the 14th day of Sept. 1862...." Battle of Cramptons Gap (South Mountain) preceded the Battle of Sharpsburg aka Antietam. About 500 Confederate soldiers, including the 16th Georgia under the leadership of Howell Cobb, were sent to defend the gap against advance of about 13,000 Union troop and slow their advance towards Sharpsburg. They were unsuccessful in defeating the opponent and suffered heavy casualties, but were able to delay the advance long enough to allow more time for Genl. Robt E Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia to become better organized. Of the 368 members of the 16th GA engaged at South Mountain (Crampton's Gap), 52% were disabled (wounded, killed, captured, or missing.)
Burial is unknown, but many bodies were removed to this cemetery so I'd like to hope that he too has found a final resting place there.
