HINDSBORO – Donald Ray Douglas, 90, of Hindsboro passed away on Thursday (Sept. 11, 2014) at his home.

Don was born Jan. 24, 1924, in Hume to Ray Eli and Jessie Helen (Vandeventer) Douglas. He married Margaret June Willoughby on Feb. 28, 1950, in Arcola; she survives.

He is also survived by three children, Kathy (Paul) Raymond of St. Charles, Ill., Kent (Peg) Douglas of Hindsboro and Kimberly (David) Hancock of Geneva, Ill.; three brothers, Dale (Phyllis) Douglas of Indianapolis, Ind., Ned (Phyllis) Douglas of Hindsboro and Glen Douglas of Phoenixville, Pa.; two sisters, Lorene Shea of Fort Collins, Colo., and Mary Frances Van Voorhis of Champaign; and three grandchildren, Neal Hancock, Craig Hancock and Samuel Raymond.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, three sisters and his parents.

Don was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, where he achieved the rank of seaman first class and served during World War II aboard the USS California.

He was a retired field representative for Butler Manufacturing.

Don was a member of the Hindsboro United Methodist Church and the Hindsboro American Legion Post 194, where he served as past commander and placed flags on veterans' graves for over 60 years.

He enjoyed mowing, camping, playing guitar, and entertained the readers of the Oakland Independent with his weekly column.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, at Krabel Funeral Home in Oakland. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Hindsboro United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Van Voorhis Cemetery.

For those who wish, memorials may be made to the Salvation Army or the Hindsboro United Methodist Church.
