Harold R. Knope, formerly of Loves Park, passed away Sept. 8, 2014, in Algoma, WI. He was born Sept. 6, 1918, in Belle Plain, WI to Frank and Matilda Knope. He spent his youth in the Shawno and Green Bay area before enlisting in the US Navy in 1940. He married Elvera Sasman (deceased 1972) in 1942, while stationed in Coral Gables, FL. They had three children. He married his second wife in 1979. He served in the US Navy from 1940 to 1946, seeing battle aboard the USS Lexington until the day she sank in the Battle of the Coral Sea, but not before he and fellow sailors saved the ice cream from the decks below before they abandoned ship. He also served on the SC 1067, a subchaser in the Alutian Islands, Alaska, until her sinking. Upon discharge from the Navy, he worked in Milwaukee for Bodga Motors, and then with Humphrey Cadillac & Oldsmobile in Rockford, IL for the remainder of his career. He was a life member of the VFW Post #9759 in Loves Park, IL. and a member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Loves Park, IL. Preceded in death by son Robert in 2011. Sunset Funeral Home.
