Commander Wilkins was a member of Attack Squadron 153, Carrier Air Wing 15 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS CONSTELLATION (CVA-64). On July 11, 1966, he was the pilot of a Douglas Attack Aircraft Skyhawk (A-4C) on a night mission of dropping flares along a road to locate targets of opportunity in the vicinity of Vinh, Nghe An Province, North Vietnam. After dropping the flares his aircraft crashed about 12 miles north of Vinh. His remains were recovered on June 21, 1989 and identified on October 10, 1996. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
===================
No wreckage was sighted during a daytime search nor were any electronic signals received. It was believed that LTCDR Wilkins' aircraft was shot down by enemy fire and that he did not survive the shoot down. However, there still existed the possibility that Wilkins successfully bailed out of his aircraft, for he was listed Missing in Action rather than Killed.

For 24 years, the Vietnamese have denied knowledge of the fate of George H. Wilkins, even though the U.S. believes there is a good possibility he was captured and died in captivity. June 28, 1974, Department of the Navy declared George Wilkins dead, based on no specific information he was still alive.
