Charles's second marriage between 1910-1920 to LULU, aka LULA___________ .
She was born in Iowa, about 1878-1879 and died some time after 16 Jan 1956. Her parents were born in Illinois.

Some trees claim the maiden surname for Lulu is a certain Lulu M. "Todd" who died in San Bernardino, CA. This is incorrect since the Lulu M. Todd referenced, had a long history of living in San Bernardino, back to at least 1935, with her husband - William Poffenberger.

In the 1900 census, Charles was a bartender and by prohibition was a tavern owner in Maquoketa, Iowa. Charles likely divorced by 1920, since he's in that year's census, married to Lulu __?__. Charles was a night watchman on the railroad and then a police officer for Savanna, until his retirement. He once ran for the position of Carroll County, Illinois Sherriff (see below).

Charles Poffenberger: Thomson Review; March 29, 1922

Candidate for sheriff of Carroll County in the Republican primaries, April 11, 1922, is thoroughly qualified in temperament, experience and good judgment, to fulfill the duties of the position asked.

Mr. Poffenberger is well and favorably known all over the country. He has a host of friends who have assured him of their cordial support. He has an impressive record as police office in Savanna, having run down some of the most daring criminals that ever operated in this vicinity. These men are now behind prison bars serving time for their crimes. Some of them are: Jim Williams and Thomas Fletcher found guilty of shoplifting at Kanert's store, 1 to 14 years. Ham and Snowbeger, stealing autos, 1 to 5 years. Wells, the negro who shot and killed another negro in a gambling den here, 35 years ago. Kimball and Slaht, breaking into cottages, 1 to 5 years. Hull and Dawson, post office robbers, 5 years in federal prison, and $5,000 fine each. This last pair were wanted all over the country. Hull refused to surrender and Poffenberger "shot it out" with him, the two men emptying their guns at each other before Hull gave up. Mr. Poffenberger has a way of "getting his man" when he goes after him. If elected as sheriff of Carroll County, the citizens may rest assured that he will enforce the laws without fear or favor during his term. He earnestly requests the support of all the voters on April 11 (Advertisement)
