death certificate #317
Louisa appears in the 1910 census for Hendersonville with her three children Burgin A, Annie L, and Gertie as 45 year old "Louise C Staton". She appears in the 1870 census as "Lanica" or "Lauica" or "Louica" depending on how the script entry is interpreted. In 1870 she is a 9 year old child in the family of Benj. Staten and Mary A. Staten. Mary Ann Capps Staton (1837-1917) was the second wife of Benjamin Walter Staton (1817- about 1880). They were married some time before the birth of Matthew Sherman Staton in January 1866. In the 1860 census, Benjamin Staten is married to Lucinda Staten. Louica does not appear in the 1860 census, but Lucinda Bishop Staton (circa 1821 - before 1866), first wife of Benjamin Walter Staton, is almost certainly Louisa's mother and Louisa was born in approximately 1861, not 1865 as suggested by the 1910 census, or 1867 on the death certificate, or 1868 on the grave marker. Family members recall that Louisa had three children- Burgin, Annie, and Gertie - with three different partners. They also recall that she had brothers Sherman and Allen. Matthew Sherman Staton(1866-1920) and Allen D Staton(1868 - 1938) were probably really her half brothers. In the 1870 census, Louica is listed as age 9, Sherman as age 4, and Allen as age 1. Information in the death certificate was provided by Burgin Staton.
Siblings included Barnabas "Barney" BJB (1844-1907)(115886132) Reuben Pickney(1849-1937), Elizabeth Ann Staton Capps(1852-1924)(66526869), Wiley Anderson (1854-1882)(65252887), and Thomas Malden(1858-1937)(17758675). Half siblings include Matthew Sherman(1866-1920)(11012592), Allen Decator (1868-1938) (10501034), Agusta Staton Jenkins (1877-1940)(107107026), and Delia Lucinda Staton Powell(1876-1966). Step mother was Mary Ann Capps Staton (1838-1917)(34029479).
