Mrs. Mary Toms passed away at Augusta Health on Wednesday, September 3, 2014, due to complications with Lupus.

She was born in Charlottesville and raised in Nelson County, the daughter of the late Edgar Richardson and Carrie Elizabeth Rhodes.

Mary was a charter member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where she played piano for and taught children's Sunday School, was a member of the Women of the Church and the church's Social Committee, and served on the Witness Committee.

Upon retiring from DuPont she became active in the AARP, American Red Cross, and volunteered at the Waynesboro Community Hospital being named "Volunteer of the Month, and Augusta Health. She also served on the board of the Waynesboro Concert Association. On May 9, 2009, Mary was named "Mother of the Year."

Mary was the uniting force for her family, but also thought of others.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by brothers Edgar and James Rhodes, and sister, Mrs. Page (Maude) Anderson.

Surviving are her devoted husband of 72 years, Mosby Clark Toms; her loving daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Toms; numerous nieces and nephews, including Joan Anderson Fitzhugh, Kathryne Anderson Marple, Ellen Anderson, and Scott Rhodes.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, September 9, 2014, at Augusta Memorial Park by Rev. James Young. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 P.M. at Westminster Presbyterian Church.

The family will receive friends at the church following the service.

Mosby and Sarah thank all those who helped their wife and mother at Augusta Health, also the Waynesboro Fire Department, and Waynesboro First Aid Crew.

Memorial donations may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, WARM (Waynesboro Area Refuge Ministry), or the Waynesboro First Aid Crew.
