Dell was born to Sarah Cunningham and Albert Knapp. He married Mary J. Knapp May 20, 1885 in Ottumwa, IA. To this union five girls and one boy were born. After traveling to Missouri and Oklahoma they made their way to New Mexico in a covered wagon in 1907. Their oldest daughter Maude stayed in Oklahoma with her husband Andrew Combs. Taking advantage of the Land Grant they made their home in McAlister, NM. In 1909 Dell was hauling telephone poles for J.A. Ware Construction when he and two other men were killed in a runaway accident. The Odd Fellows made the funeral arrangements and "lent the bereaved widow all the assistance and sympathy that a band of brothers could to one of their number."
