Jan Sijnhorst was born in Noordeloos, South Holland, the Netherlands, circa 1807. He was the son of Huijg Sijnhorst and Marrigje Van Muijlwijk. On November 3, 1829, in Noordeloos, he married Macheltje Boot, the daughter of Cornelius Boot and Jenneke Briet.

On April 11, 1847, Jan and Macheltje sailed from Rotterdam aboard The Nagasaki with their seven children: Cornelis (born April 1, 1830); Sijgje (born October 16, 1831); Jan (born April 30, 1836); Huig (born December 4, 1837); Jenneke (born February 22, 1840); Willem (born December 26, 1841); and Frederik (born February 28, 1844). Three young children died in Noordeloos, the first Jenneke (July 22, 1833-May 18, 1835); the first Huig (October 31, 1834-June 25,1837); and the first Albertus (July 14, 1846-December 5, 1846).

On May 16, 1847, the Nagasaki arrived in Baltimore, and Jan, Macheltje, and their children joined Jan's brother, Dirk, and Jan and Dirk's mother, Marrigje, for the journey to Marion County, Iowa.

After their arrival near Pella, two more children were born. Albertus was born on August 26, 1847, the first child born in the new Dutch colony; and young Jan was born in 1849.

Jan Sijnhorst died sometime before the 1850 census was taken on September 17, 1850, when Macheltje was listed as the head of their household. Their son, the first Jan had also died by this time.

The family name Sijnhorst soon became written as Synhorst.
