According to the book "Bowie's and Their Kindred: A Genealogical and Biographical History, James Bowie was the son of John Bowie, Jr. and his second wife, Elizabeth Pottinger of Prince George's County, Maryland. As a young man, James removed to South Carolina around 1760 where he met his wife, Jeanne Mirabeau. Their first two children, twins Rezin and Rhesa Bowie, were born in S. Carolina. The twins removed to Louisiana where Rezin's son, Rezin Plesant Bowie Jr., invented the Bowie knife and his son Colonel James Bowie, fought at The Alamo.
