Born in Pickens County, she was a daughter of the late John B. and Frances Youngblood Taylor.

Mrs. Bechtler attended the Wil Lou Gray Opportunity School and was one of the first two people in the state to earn a G.E.D. She attended Columbia College and retired from the Opportunity School where she was a financial director for over 30 years.

She was a charter member of Platt Springs United Methodist church, and more recently a member of Bethel United Methodist Church.
