At the time that William Straight was born, Marion County WV did not exist. However, his father, Jacob Straight had settled land along what would become Straight's Run in the Fairmont District, of Marion County WV, in 1774, according to Jacob's land grant dated 20 MAR 1785.

William Straight's mother's full name is unknown, but from his brother Peter's records (Memorial #86804747), she was Elizabeth Straight.

William Straight and his wife, "Patty" co-signed two indentures on 8 MAR 1823, in Monongalia County VA (Deed Book OS Vol. 9, pp. 60-62). These instruments conveyed land on the waters of Finch's Run to Peter Straight.

William Straight married first Martha Hayes on 2 MAR 1799, in Monongalia County VA; and second Mary Freeland on 16 NOV 1843, in Marion County VA, as proven by their marriage records at the West Virginia Vital Research Records website.

His date of death was determined from his obituary, as it was published by the Marion County Genealogy Club.

William Straight's Will, dated 21 FEB 1852, and probated JAN Term 1855, was recorded in Marion County WV Will Book 1, pp. 190-192. In that Will he requested that he be buried "by the side of former wife in the burying ground at Cramers." His son Alpheus Straight inherited the family farm. This farm is identified on the map of the Fairmont District, Marion County WV, published in the "Atlas of Marion and Monongalia Counties", by D. J. Lake & Co., 1886. The farm was shown as on a tributary of Finch's Run, and belonging to Alpheus Straight. That tributary is Straight's Run.

Although it is not known exactly where Cramer's burying ground was located some researchers have reported that it was along Straight's Run.

Also some researchers report that William Straight had a middle name or at least an initial "N". However, his name is not given that way in any of the records referenced here.

William and Martha Hayes Straight had at least 12 children, including: Henry Straight; Alexander Straight; Benjamin Straight or Streight; Arizona or Arzanna Mariah Conaway; Susanna Rice; Amos Hayes Straight; Jacob H. Straight; Rachel Thorn; Martha Straight; Alpheus Straight; Sarah Barrac; and Garlinda Thorn.

William Straight seems to have adopted the three children of Mary Freeland, by her first maariage to John Freeland, who were William E., Michael and Rebecca, and were shown with surname Straight, in their 1850 Census record.
