Herbert (Bud) Bacon, 42, of Sullivan, Ind., formerly of Springfield was found dead Wednesday morning beside his jeep at the Thunderbird Coal Mine.

An autopsy performed Wednesday night showed Bacon was fatally injured when he was struck by a beam which fractured his neck.

Mr. Bacon, a native of Springfield and also a former resident of Pana, left here three years ago for Sullivan, Ind. where he was supervisor of the Thunderbird Mine.

He was a member of the Ansar Shrine and Consistory and AF&AM Lodge 71, and was a veteran of the Navy in World War II serving on Okinawa.

Surviving are his widow, Betty; his mother, Mrs. Mabel Bacon of Springfield; two brothers, Harry and Leonard, both of Springfield; two sisters, Mrs. Melba Snodgrass of Springfield and Mrs. Alma Burroughs of Denver, Colo.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Kilin & Egan Funeral Home, Rev. Raymond Knudson Jr. officiating.

Burial in Roselawn Cemetery.

INVESTIGATORS SEEK CAUSE OF MINERS DEATH
SHELBURN, Ind., Feb. 15. - Federal mine inspectors and insurance investigators today attempted to determine the cause of death of a coal mine electrician at the Thunderburd Mine near here.

The body of Herbert E. Bacon, 45, of 205 Crowder street, Sullivan, was found beside his jeep in the mine Wednesday morning. He was believed to have been dead only 20 or 30 minutes when another electrician found the body.

Authorities speculated that Bacon might have struck his head on an overhead beam while riding through the mine. Sullivan County Coroner John Alexander said Bacon died of a broken neck.

Bacon, who came to Sullivan three years ago, was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 71, Springfield, Ill.; Scottish Rite Valley of Springfield; Ansar Shrine Temple. Springfield; and Elks Club of Pana, Ill. He formerly lived in Springfield and Pana.

Survivors include his widow, Elizabeth; his mother, Mrs. Mabel Bacon; and two brothers, Harry and Leonard, all of Springfield; and two sisters, Melba Snodgrass, of Springfield; and Alma Burroughs, of Denver, Colo.

The body was taken to the Alexander Funeral Home in Sullivan. The remains will be removed to the Kirlin and Egan Funeral Home at Springfield.

Services will be at the funeral chapel.

Interment will follow in Roselawn cemetery, Springfield.
