In the 1920 US Census, George Dewey's father's occupation was Captain of seagoing tug, his brother Jesse was 3rd Mate, brother Horace was 3rd Mate, brother Leslie was Seaman and George Dewey was 2nd Mate - all on transport steamships. In a 1922 Baltimore, MD city directory, George Dewey was listed as Ship's Master; he was 24 years old.

George Dewey was Master of the SS Onondaga, a merchant ship, when it was torpedoed and sunk in the Caribbean during WWII. See Memorial #134760640

His brother, Leslie, had died 10 days earlier when his ship, MS Oneida, was also torpedoed and sunk in the Caribbean.
