S. R. Hodges, Mathews County Sheriff, Dies
Mathews - Spencer Richardson Hodges Sr., 61, Mathews County Sheriff since 1959, died early Wednesday at a Richmond hospital after a lingering illness.
He had served in the county Sheriff's Department for 29 years, having been appointed deputy sheriff in 1944.
He served as deputy until 1959 when he was elected sheriff and he was re-elected to four year terms in three subsequent elections.
A native of Mathews county, he was a member of Westville Christian Church where he had also served as superintendent of the Sunday school.
Active in community affairs, he was a past president of the Mathews Chamber of Commerce and the Mathews Volunteer Fire Department.
He served in the Merchant Marine and for 14 years was employed with Mathews Dairies here. He later was engaged in the insurance business.
Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Frances H. Hodges of Mathews; a son, Spencer R. Hodges Jr. of Mathews; four sisters, Mrs. Louise H. Leigh and Mrs. Elizabeth H. Hudgins of Hudgins; Mrs. George Snow of Mathews and Mrs. Hilda H. Winder of Norfolk; two brothers, Capt. H. Willie Hodges Sr. of Norfolk and Capt. J. David Hodges of Gwynn; and three grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. James Mackey. Burial will be in the Green family cemetery here.
Pallbearers will be Donald Bowman, Jean Goin, Glenn Mantell, John Warner, Jesse Carroll Thornton and William Brian Hudgins.
