John grew up in Ceylon, but was educated at "Eltham," School for the Sons of Missionaries, at Blackheath, near London, from June 1885; he spent the winter of 1894 with his family, since retired (1890) to Kellyville, New South Wales.
John was listed (Ferguson's Directory) as a Tea Planter at Retengalla Estate, Bogawantalawa, Ceylon (1896-97); also at Glenmary Estate, Central Peermade (1898-99), and at Ranecoil Estate, Peermade (1903-1906), both near Travancore, Kerala; and later at Nagercoil, Tamil Nadu (the last three places are all in South India).
John died at his bungalow at Chunkankadai, 5 or 6 kms W.N.W. of the town of Nagercoil, Tamil Nadu (very close to the southern-most extremity of the Indian mainland).
The Salvation Army Cemetery where he was buried lies on St Xavier's College Road, Chunkankadai, via Nagercoil, about 300 metres south of the highway turn-off (judging by the google.map view); it was close to John's bungalow.

N.B. This memorial would not post without supplying a "City Name" - but Nagercoil is not on the very short list provided for the State of Tamil Nadu; so I was "obliged" to mis-select Kottar, which, as it turns out, is a locality and bazaar area within the town of Nagercoil itself (although that took a bit of finding).
