Born November 7, 1881 in Purdue Hill, Monroe County, Alabama. He and his first wife, Katie Estelle Gregson, married on 30 Oct. 1904. In the Spring of 1911 they boarded a train to Idaho. Feeling ill before they left she had asked her sister, Susie to take care of her family if something happened to her. Katie died in a Salt Lake City hospital May 22, 1911 four days after surgery to remove an abscess on her lung. She was taken back to Malad, Oneida County, Idaho for burial. They had three children, Alvin, Reuben (died of small pox and is buried in Malad) and Mary Lou before they moved West. Some time after her death, her sister, Susie Agnes Gregson went West to help with the move of the children and John Claude back South to Alabama. They married in Idaho 4 Oct. 1911. They lived in Idaho for a while and first child, George was born. They later moved back South and raised their 14 children (along with the two children born by Kaite). John & Susie's children were: George Alma, Ruth Penelope, Claude, Edith, John W. Lewis Floyd, Sarah Ann, Joseph Ruben, Colleen Moore, Dean Penley, John Claude, Susie Helen, and Joyce Marie. They raised their children in Goodway, Monroe County, Alabama. Both John & Susie are buried in the New Johnson Cemetery at Goodway, Alabama. John Claude had a farm in Goodway. He crafted fox horns for hunting for enjoyment. Although he farmed he had a chair business where he produced beautiful wooden chairs. He also had a cane mill where syrup was made from sugar cane. He was a tall man in stature and lived for his family.
