MAN DIES IN ROUNDUP OF CATTLE

MASSENA -- Claude W. Hitsman, 45, Waddington native, died about 4 P.M. yesterday while rounding up cattle on Barnhart Island in the St. Lawrence River.
Mr. Hitsman employed be Ralph Riley of the County Rd. and several other menwere on the island handling the annual fall roundup of about 500 head on cattle, preparing to return them to the mainland, Mr. Hitsman slumped against a fence and then to the ground. He evidently died almost immediately.
A scow was sent to the mainland and the corner and a physician were notified. Mrs. Florence Dunlap of Madrid, corner, appointed Dr. Philip Mardon of Massena as corners physician.
Dr. Mardon went to the Island in the scow, together with a stretcher from Donaldson ambulance, Dr, Mardon pronounced the man dead and the body was brought to the mainland, Mrs Dunlap issued a verdict of death due to natural causes.
Riley, who employed Mr. Hitsman, said he had complained of chest pains for several weeks but did not see aphysician.
Mr. Hitsman was born Oct. 25, 1907 in Waddington, one of 11 children of Chesley and Carrie Martin Hitsman.
He spent all his life in Wadington. Since April he had lived and worked on the Riley farm.
Surviving are three brothers, Robert and Fred Hitsman, Waddington, Clarence Hitsman, Thiells, four sisters, Mrs. Stanley Derby, Central Square, Mrs. George Middlemiss, Mrs. Milton Parmeter and Mrs. Gertrude Bush all of Waddington.
Funeral services will be at 2 P.M. tomorrow at the Mann Funeral Home in Waddington. The Rev. Gayle Wetzell, pastor, of Norwood Congregational Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Waddington Cemetery.
