A prominent New Yorker of the colonial and Federal eras, Mangle Minthorne was a New York City Alderman and a pillar of St. Mark's Church in the Bowery. Twice married, his first spouse was the former Sarah Cock, whom he wed on August 5, 1762, shortly before his 25th birthday. Three of the children born of this union died in infancy, and are buried with Sarah, who died in 1773, in Trinity Churchyard. Five years later, in the midst of the American Revolution, the widowed Mangle took the former Aryet Constable (b.1743) as his second wife on October 8, 1778. As was common practice at the time, the son and daughter later born to the couple, Phillip and Hannah, were given the names of their deceased half-siblings from Mangle's first marriage. Hannah Minthorne later married Daniel D. Tompkins, remembered by history as a Governor of the State of New York and Vice-President of the US under James Monroe. Mangle Minthorne died in his 84th year in the spring of 1821, and his entombment in the Minthorne vault at St. Mark's is noted by the stone plaque seen to the right of his famous son-in-law's. A replacement of the early 1800's original, its inscription may be seen below. His widow, Aryet, joined him in death in 1830.
