Life Story of Melvin Blackledge--Funeral services for Melvin Eugene Blackledge were held Tuesday, Feb. 20 at the Monroe Methodist Church. The Rev. George Pennington and the Rev. Orin Young officiated.
Mrs. Bill Lewis sang two songs, "Good Night and Good Morning" and "Sweet Bye and Bye." Mrs. Ralph Gloyd was accompanist with Mrs. John LeGrand as organist. Pallbearers were Gerald Blackledge, Elmo Blackledge, Duane Blackledge, Gerritt Van Zee, Dennis Van Zee, and Kenneth Blackledge. Interment was in Monroe Cemetery (Silent City).
Melvin Eugene Blackledge of Monroe passed away at his residence February 19, 1962 at the age of 77 years, 2 months, and 12 days. He was born the son of Eugene and Lant (Grey) Blackledge on December 7, 1884, southeast of Newton in Jasper County. On August 27, 1905, he was united in marriage to Olive Oldham at Reasnor. To this union five children were born, four of whom survive. With the exception of nine years when he lived in Phoenix, Ariz., Mr. Blackledge spent most of his life in the Jasper County area where he farmed and did carpenter work. He was a member of the Methodist Church in Monroe.
Surviving are his wife, three sons and one daughter, Gerald of Canton, Ohio, Elmo and Duane of Monroe, and Mrs. Gerritt (Oreta) Van Zee of Pella; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. Ollie Waring of Beaverton, Ore., and Mrs. Lela Waring of Fresno, Calif. Preceding him in death were a son Wayne, who died February 9, 1912, three brothers, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. (contributed by [email protected])
