OBITUARY: Monroe Legacy newspaper, November 2, 2000, Monroe, Jasper County, Iowa.
Services Held--Services for Elmo Cassius Blackledge were held Thursday November 2, 2000, at the United Methodist Church in Monroe. Rev. John Poe, Pastor of the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church officiated the services. He was assisted by Rev. Al Kinrade. Interment was in Silent City Cemetery in Monroe.
Elmo Cassius Blackledge, the son of Melvin Eugene and Olive (Oldham) Blackledge was born west of Monroe, December 3, 1912. He passed away on Sunday, October 29, 2000, at Pella Regional Health Center at the age of 87 years. His school years were spent in rural Jasper County and Phoenix, Arizona. On October 28, 1936, he was united in marriage to Wilma Jeanette De Haai at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church near Prairie City.
Elmo learned the carpentry trade from his father with whom he worked for several years. Elmo and Jeanette moved to their farm west of Monroe in 1942 where they were dairy farmers for 23 years. After co-owning Ammer Hardware for a short time, he worked with his friend and partner, Bob Beesley under B & B Construction until retirement. Elmo was a faithful member of the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church south of Prairie City and enjoyed bowling, doing odd jobs for people and visiting with friends.
Surviving is his son and daughter-in-law and their family: Kenneth and Arliss Blackledge of Algona, and Scott, Steve, and Pam, daughter and son-in-law Virginia and Terry Aiken of Clive and their family Brandon and Lindsey. Also surviving is a sister Oreta Van Zee of Pella and several nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
A memorial for the Church or Monroe Fire and Ambulance units have been designated by his family.
His wife Jeanette preceded him in death in 1988. Also preceding him were his parents, an infant brother and two adult brothers, Garold and Duane.
