Chastaine Flynt, 84, retired 36-year charter mayor of Flowood, died of lung failure Wednesday at Lakeland Nursing Center.
Services are 2 p.m. today at First Baptist Church in Flowood with burial in Magee City Cemetery. Visitation is 8 a.m.-noon today at Baldwin-Lee Funeral Home in Pearl and after 1 p.m. at the church.
Mayor Flynt was a Simpson County native and moved to Flowood 58 years ago. He was a charter member and deacon of First Baptist Church in Flowood and served as its music director for 31 years. Before he retired as mayor, he retired from Knox Glass Plant in Flowood after 36 years there.
Mayor Flynt helped organize and incorporate Flowood. He was a force behind the construction of the Hinds-Rankin Levee in the early 1960s. He served as a member of the Levee Board and was director of operations for the levee system. He served on the board of directors for the Mississippi Municipal Association during his tenure as mayor. Mayor Flynt was a 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and Shriner and a member of the Capitol Lodge No. 600.
Survivors include: wife, Alberta; son, Don Flynt of Flowood; daughter, Charlotte Koster of Dallas; sister, Maude Wells of Magee; and four grandchildren.
