Nobility. Titular Duke of Saxony. He was the fourth son of Johan Friedrich I and Sibylle von Jülich-Kleve-Berg. Always a sickly and weak child he decided to go to Jena to study theology at the university there. He was still a minor when his father died, and he received Gotha as an appanage. Although he was able to rule Saxe-Gotha himself after 1557 he never did so and instead left the administration to his eldest brother.
