Nobility. He was the only child of Johann and his first wife Sophie of Mecklenburg. Elector of Saxony from 1532. He was captured by the emperor in 1547 and deprived of the electorate and the duchy of Wittenberg, which was awarded to his cousin, because of his adherence to the Reformation.
