A poem by Loretta McLane Murphy:

How often have I found it, where beforehand I least expected it.
We are weak and unstable; We are quickly deceived and soon changed. A friend is rarely to be found that can continueth faithful in all of his friend's distresses.
What I am not willing to suffer in others, I ought to by all means avoid myself.
Love is active, sincere, affectionate, courageous, patient, faithful, prudent, long suffering, manly, and never seeking itself.
Thou wilt soon be deceived if thou only look to the outward appearance of (illegible).
How seldom we weigh our neighbor in the same balance with ourselves.
A merry going forth bringeth after a mournful return; and a joyful might maketh often a sad mourning. As thine eye observeth others, so art thou also noted again by others.
Give me strength to resist, patience to endure, and contanancy to persevere.
A wise lover regardeth not so much the gift of him who loves but as the love of the giver.
Loretta G. McLane
