FRANCIS JOHN MURPHY
January 23, 1997
Francis John Murphy, 80, of Oak Harbor, Wash., died Thursday at Anacortes Convalescent Center. His widow is the former Delphine E. Pfhaler, formerly of Scranton. They were married in 1946.
Born Dec. 30, 1916, in Dunmore to Frank and Loretta Murphy, he was a veteran of World War II, serving with the 140th Seabees in the South Pacific. A long-haul truck driver, he moved to Waldorf, Md., in 1961 and worked at Indian Head Naval Ordinance Station. He retired in 1981 and moved to Oak Harbor.
Also surviving are five daughters, Carol Bufante, Dunmore, Mary Janet Simmons, Waldorf, Md., Cathleen Hand, Oak Harbor, Loretta G. Stewart, Great Falls, Mont., and Frances J. Spellacy, Garfield Heights, Ohio; a sister, Eileen LaStrange, Townsend, MD., 18 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be conducted today at 4 p.m. from the Burley Funeral Chapel, Oak Harbor, by the Rev. William J. Rimes, SJ, St. Augustine's Church, Oak Harbor. Interment with full military honors will be in Arlington National Cemetery.
