Mary Smeltzer, 16, Killed on 141
Mary Christine Smeltzer, 16, of rural Woodward died at 5 p.m. Monday at the Dallas County Hospital from injuries she received earlier that afternoon during a one-car crash on Highway 141 on the Beaver Creek Bridge.
According to the Highway Patrol, Miss Smeltzer, alone in the car, was traveling west on Iowa 141 a mile east of the U.S. 169 junction when she reportedly lost control of the vehicle and slammed into the steel railing on the south side of the bridge.
Miss Smeltzer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Lee Smeltzer, was born Sept. 17, 1953 in Des Moines. The Smeltzers had been previous Redfield residents, moving to Woodward about 10 years ago.
Survivors include her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Smeltzer of rural Woodward; three brothers, Chuck, Dennis and Micky and her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Chalmer Thompson of Des Moines and Mary Smeltzer of Redfield.
