John was born on March 30, 1880 in Martinsburg, West Virginia. He was the third child of George and Margaret Pierce Kerfoot.

As the Kerfoots made their way north into Pennsylvania, they resided in various locations along the way: Markleton in Somerset County; South Connellsville (White Rock) in Fayette County; Monongahela in Washington County; and Dravosburg in Allegheny County.

In 1900, John began work as a molder at the National Tube Works in McKeesport, Pennsylvania. He would spend his entire work career there.

On June 15, 1905, John married Matilda Wisser. They were married by the Reverend Ray Miller of the First Christian Church in Dravosburg. They would have 6 children together; one stillborn.

In 1940, John was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. His condition worsened over the next five years. On March 13, 1945 at 4:00 AM, John died at his home in Dravosburg. In addition to multiple sclerosis, arteriosclerosis was listed as a contributing factor to his death.

On Friday, March 16, 1945 John was buried in Richland Cemetery in Dravosburg, Pennsylvania.

[His death certificate and grave marker show his year of birth as 1881. However, his name is listed on the US Census of 1880, which was taken on June 10 of that year. Also, he gives his birth year as 1880 on his marriage license.]
