Born in Harpers Ferry, Jefferson County, Virginia, Margaret was the third child of John and Susanna Steward Pierce. Her date of birth, July 25, is an estimated guess based on information found in the U.S. Census records of 1860 and 1870.

On January 25, 1877, Margaret married George Kerfoot in Martinsburg, West Virginia. Four of their children would be born there. Making their way north into Pennsylvania, they would live in Markleton, South Connellsville (White Rock), Monongahela, and Dravosburg.

On May 4, 1899, after giving birth to her 14th child, Margaret and her newborn child died. Margaret's death is attributed to Bright's disease, a disease of the kidney often accompanied with edema and hypertension. In addition to the newborn, Margaret was preceded in death by four other children.

Her obituary stated that she "was a well-known and highly respected lady and loved by all who knew her."

On Friday, May 5, 1899, Margaret and her child were laid to rest in Monongahela Cemetery in Washington County.
