Eleanor was born to Roy and Adele (Hammer) Bebensee of Elkton, SD.When she was 3, they moved to Taopi,SD (which is now Colton). At 13, she moved with the family back to her mother's family farm southwest of Elkton. Her parents eventually took over the family homestead. Eleanor would be the fourth generation to live on the homestead.

In school her best subject was reading but she was also good in math. She was often the lead in school plays. She graduated from Elkton High School as validictorian.

At 17, Eleanor met Martin Bosch in Elkton, SD through her uncle Bert Hammer. She lived with her uncle during the week so that she could work after school. Martin worked with Bert and came one night for supper.

Eleanor married Martin on the Bebensee family farm outside of Elkton on August 13, 1950. This was the summer after she graduated. Her sister Mardella stood up for her and Ted Asp stood up for Martin. Eleanor and Martin set up their home in Brookings. Martin left shortly after to serve in the US Army from 1950-1952. Eleanor worked at that time at the Farmers Coop in Brookings as the bookkeeper.

Eleanor was an avid reader. She checked several books out every week from the library in Brookings. With her family she enjoyed several outdoor activities including camping, boating, snowmobiling and riding motorcycles (when her health allowed). She learned to knit in the hospital while 'blind' after having retinal surgery. The knitting gave her something to do while she waited for her eyes to heal. She also loved going for long walks, both for her health/pain management and because she enjoyed the solitude. A local resident recalled many years later her perfect posture while she walked.

Eleanor was a strict hard line parent. But it's my opinion (Sherilyn) that she drove all three of us kids to amount to something from her strictness. We all finished school and went on to be successful in life and able to support ourselves 100%.

Eleanor spent a lot of time in the hospital during her life. She always said it started as a child when she had her appendix out. I remember her being in the hospital for several surgeries though the years. Eye surgery. Hysterectomy. And then the cancer...which was discovered when she had some moles removed from her back. In what seemed a short amount of time it had moved to her breast. In a little more than two years she was gone. During that time Martin and Eleanor not only traveled to the Mayo Clinic and the University Hospital in Minneapolis....they also traveled to New Orleans and San Francisco...two places Eleanor always wanted to see.

Eleanor died on an early Saturday morning at the Brookings Hospital. Knowing that her time was close she told the nurses not to call us until she was gone. Good or bad...that was her choice. It has always bothered me that she died alone.

Eleanor and Martin had three children:
David Bosch 1956
Sherilyn Bosch 1958
Valerie Bosch 1961
