Roy grew up near Elkton and attended rural schools. His family lived in Minneapolis for a brief time in his early years. He worked at several different jobs before his marriage to Adele Mary Hammer on June 11, 1932 at Brookings.

The couple lived on a farm near Colton, SD from 1934 until 1943. At that time they oved back to Adele's family farm southwest of Elkton where he continued farming until a heart condition forced his retirement in 1976.

From 1976 until 1987, he worked with his son in the plumbing business in Elkton.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Elkton and had served as a deacon and trustee. He had also been a member of the Farmer's Union.

Roy and Adele had five children; Eleanor, Mardella, Dorothy, Marjorie and Roy, Jr.

Roy was my maternal grandfather. He was a hard working man who farmed southwest of Elkton, SD. He always told us grandchildren that he was tougher than a whalebone! He limped badly on one leg but I never knew for sure what it was that caused him the pain. (Gout?) In his later years he had a lot of heart issues. But he always had his sense of humor. After one of his heart attacks he told the nurses that he'd died on the table but they checked his chart and noticed he still had insurance. So they hit him with the paddles again and brought him back!
