It may very well be that James Lawrie was his father with another woman before Sarah McGuire married James Lawrie. That is possibly why in James Smith and Sarah McGuire's (relict Lowry and Smith) Will's it states that Robert is a "friend". It does not explain why Robert would put "unknown" in the parent spot in both his marriage records.
Robert first married Margaret "Maggie" Pringle, in Galt, Ontario, Canada.

Unfortunately, Maggie Lowry (nee Pringle) died from Gallstone complications when James Kenneth Lowry was 2 months old.
Robert secondly married Margaret "Maggie" Smith about two years later on October 3, 1877 in Beverly, Wentworth, Ontario.

Sometime between 1901 and 1906 (it is believed 1903) this resilient family headed to Alberta. They settled in Strathcona, Alberta, Canada which is today, the Red Deer area. Robert, 59, still married to Margaret, 48. It is thought that perhaps James Kenneth went to the Edmonton area and they all followed. Son, William 2,7 married to Florence (nee Racher) and they have a son named William age 5 at the time (he was born in Ontario). Daughter, Sarah Jane is married and moved out with her husband James Baker as well. George was 19, Charles was 17, Susie was 14, Morgan was 12 and Lorne was 11. All born in Ontario.
In 1919, Robert fell from a Horse and Buggy and hit his head on a Rock. His son William Thomas was with him as he passed away from that injury. Robert and Florence were interred in Alberta with their son Morgan.
