From The Holt County Sentinel-February 26, 1909-

"Henderson L. Ward was born in Harlan County, Kentucky, October 20, 1841, and therefore was in his 69th year at the time of his death. He was a soldier of the Union-having served in the Union Army as a member of Company F 49th Kentucky Infantry, serving nearly four years.

At the close of the war, Mr. Ward came west and went to Montana, and in 1874, came to Holt county, locating at Craig. During his residence there he had at times been engaged in merchandising, grain buying, buying and shipping stock, but of late he was farming and stock raising.

In 1877, he married Frances, daughter of Abraham Sharp, who with his brother, W.A., were the original settlers of Union Township, coming there from Bracken County, Kentucky, and whence came Sharpe's Grove. Mrs. Ward, four sons, and two grandchildren survive-all his sons being grown.

In 1888 and 1890 Mr. Ward was elected a member of the county court from the northern district, and served these four years to the complete satisfaction of its constituents.

In 1875 he was the senior warden of Craig Masonic Lodge, with C.A. Daughty as Master, and in 1877-8-9 he served this lodge as secretary.

He was prominent also as a member of Craig Lodge I.O.O.F. and a Past Grand, and the last sad rites were conducted by this lodge at the grave.

No better citizen lived in all Holt County, and his death is a positive loss to all our people."
