Maria was the eldest of three children born to Edward I. Burhans and Mary More Burhans. She was raised at Roxbury where her father was a prominent merchant, judge, and politician. She attended school at Roxbury Academy and later at Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Maria married to George Wilson Lauren on 17 January 1866 at Roxbury. They made their home at Bovina Valley and Roxbury where her husband was a dry goods merchant. After making extensive renovations to their home, they opened it as a boarding house known as Lauren Villa. After her husband died in 1905, she made her home with her brother, Edward Clay Burhans, and his wife, Esther, with whom she was a dear friend. After her brother’s death in 1912, the sisters-in-law continued living together. After Esther’s death in 1922, she lived her remaining years with Mrs. Agnes Wyckoff who tenderly cared for her. Maria was remembered for her generosity and kindness. Maria and George were the parents of two children, Edward Burhans Lauren and William Burhans Lauren, both of whom died young. Maria attended all John More Association reunions held in her lifetime. She was an original member of the Permanent Committee and was among those who organized the very first reunion.
