Edward was the third of three children born to Edward I. Burhans and Mary More Burhans. He was raised at Roxbury where his father was a merchant. His mother died when he was five-years old and his father’s second wife, Charity Barnett Burhans, assumed responsibility for raising him. Edward married to Esther A. Leming on 15 September 1875 at Roxbury. He entered into a partnership with his brother-in-law, George Wilson Lauren, and they conducted a large mercantile business at Roxbury. About 1900, he was a butter dealer and, in 1910, he was the owner and operator of a dairy farm. About two weeks before his death, he slipped and fell while walking. His head hit the ice but he was not considered seriously injured at the time. He had actually suffered a concussion which developed into meningitis from which he died. Edward and Esther had no children.
