Edward was the son of John E. Burhans and Mary DuBois Burhans who relocated to Roxbury about 1799 from Kingston, New York. Edward married to Mary More on 15 October 1837 at Roxbury. They made their home at that place where he was a merchant. Edward and Mary were the parents of three children; Maria DuBois Burhans, Jonas More Burhans, and Edward Clay Burhans. Mary died in 1857 and Edward married next to Charity Barnett in November 1858 at Roxbury. They made their home at that place and were the parents of one child, Don DuBois Burhans. Edward served Roxbury as Justice of the Peace from 1829 to 1845 and as Postmaster from 1827 to 1850. He was a member of New York State Assembly in 1844 and 1868. Edward was a New York State Senator in 1858 and 1859. He was a Delaware County Court associate judge from 1845 to 1847.
