Jackson Boy Dies On Bike; Arrest Driver
A 12-year-old Jackson Township boy died Sunday at Passvant Hospital, Chicago, of injuries suffered Saturday when struck by a car while bicycling on U.S. 6 near County Road 400E.
State police said Richard Henry Fitzgerald, Rt. 1, Westville, and a companion were riding bicycles along U.S. 6 Saturday afternoon when the accident occurred. The boy died of head injuries and severe lacerations of the forehead and head.
Frederick W. Schultz, 62, Rt. 1, Hobart, driver of the car, was arrested on charges of drunken driving and was fined $47.25 in JP court, police said. A two-month suspension of driver's license was recommended.
The Fitzgerald boy, a seventh-grade student at Liberty School, and his companion were westbound on U.S. 6, at the top of Beverly Hill, Trooper Tom Frailey said, when the boy started to cross the highway. He stopped when he saw the oncoming car, which ran off the road when the driver apparently panicked, and struck the bicycle three feet off the roadway, police said.
The youth's death was the 28th traffic fatality to be recorded in Porter County this year. At the same time a year ago, 40 county traffic fatalities were recorded.
The boy was born July 25, 1958 at Buffalo, N. Y., a son of Chester and Patricia (Michaels) Fitzgerald. His father preceded him in death in 1964.
He was a member of Boy Scout Troop 8 of Chesterton.
Surviving besides his mother are two brothers, Daniel M. and Matthew J., both at home; a sister, Mrs. William L. (Patricia) Marshall, Philadelphia; and paternal grandmother, Mrs. Isa Phillips, Valparaiso.
Services are pending at Bartholomew Funeral Home.
