Three Killed In Southern Utah Crash

PANGUITCH, (UP)-An elderly Utah couple and a California tourist were killed near here yesterday in a headon auto smashup that sent the state's highway death toll skyrocketing to 104 names.

Mr, and Mrs. Edward Leo Chamberlain of Kanab were killed when their, car was involved in a collision with a station wagon driven by E.I. Barnes of Portervile, California. Mrs. Winifred A. Barnes, wife of the driver, was fatally injured in the mishap.

Edward Leo Chamberlain, 63, was listed as driver of the Utah car.

Officers were at a loss to explain the accident, which occurred in Garfield County on U.S. Highway 89 about two miles north of the "Y" not far from the entrance to Bryce Canyon. Investigators said neither car was attempting to pass, no skid marks were found at the scene and visibility conditioms were good except that the cars met on a slight rise.

A year ago today Utah's traffic toll stood at 96.
