History of Lycoming County by J F Meginnes:

William G Elliott, manufacturer and manager of the National paint Works, was born in Williamsport, the son of Ralph and Mary (Gibson) Elliott. His education was received in the public schools, Dickinson seminary and the Philadelphia high school. Returning from school he resumed rural pursuits on his father's farm for two years, when the began his business life in Canto Missouri. He returned to his native city in 1859, and followed farming until the rebellion began, and he enlisted in Company A 11th Pa Volunteers and saw service until honorably discharged having participated in the battle of Falling Waters, Virginia. He embarked in the mercantile business for 5 years, and after went to Oil City Pa where he was successful working in the oil business. He subsequently erected a fine block three stories high at the corner of 4th and Pine Streets containing the Academy of Music on the second floor. In 1872 he was appointed express manager for the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad.

Mr. Elliott married on Jan 21862 to Emily M Ellis and they have three children: May E, Norman and Wistar M. Mr. Elliott is an active Republican* and belongs to the Ross Club. The family are attendants of the First Presbyterian Church and have a beautiful residence at 4th & Elmira Streets. Mr. Elliott is an example of success, natural aptitude for business and recognized integrity.

* He later became mayor of Williamsport.
