Henry Gordon Shaw was the youngest of eleven children of William Alexander Shaw and Elizabeth Emmeline BRADLEY Shaw. He was educated at Hillsboro Military School in North Carolina. He did not graduate however, but left at the age of sixteen to enter the Confederate Army, serving throughout the war until the final surrender. He was in Co. B, 5th Battalion, Browns Regt, State Troops, and his widow received a pension after his death.

He married Sarah Elizabeth Saye on 7 February 1867, and settled in Carter's Crossing, Sumter County, where he was a planter. He was also the President of the Farmer's Mutual Fire Insurance Association of Sumter County. He served two terms in the House of Representatives of the South Carolina legislature, from 1886-1890, and was active in the Democratic Party.

He and his wife were the parents of four children--three daughters and one son, Jamie, who died in infancy.
