Robert mustered into military service in the Civil War on 15 November 1861 in Capt. T.D. Frierson's Company of Hatch's Regiment of the SCV. This later became Co. K of 23rd Regiment of the South Carolina Volunteers. He was wounded in the leg during the Battle of Manassas in August 1862. He returned to duty and was killed 30 July 1864 near Petersburg, Virginia." He was shot in the head above the left eye & died in a short time; A pious and amiable young man, son of the late William Shaw of Sumter District."
