Virginia Collar Clark

Athens - Virginia Collar Clark died peacefully at home on Sunday, December 4, 2011 after a long illness. She was born in Austell, GA, was a long time resident of the Druid Hills area of Atlanta, and moved to Talmage Terrance in Athens, Georgia in 2000. She was the daughter of Virginia F. and William F. Collar, Sr. She was predeceased by her husband Marion T. Clark who was a member of the Chemistry faculties at Emory University and Agnes Scott College. She was a graduate of Georgia State College for Women. Mrs. Clark was President of the Emory Faculty Wives Club, on the Executive Committee of the Decatur-DeKalb Civic Ballet, and an active member of Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church where she was a member and President of the Altar Guild, making communion bread and initiating the custom of the Chrisman tree at Christmas. She will be remembered for her love and devotion to her husband, her love for her family, her pride and delight in domesticity, her sensitivity to beauty in the arts and literature, her joy of her children's progress, and her courage in living and in dying. She was predeceased by three brothers, William F. Collar, Jr., Henry N. Collar and Carlton Collar. She is survived by her daughters Virginia "Jinna" Fraser Clark of Scottsdale, GA, Martha Lind Clark McKean of Athens, GA, and Anne Clark Nettles (George E. Jr.) of Macon, GA, a brother John Lind Collar (Betty) of Douglasville, GA; a sister Grace Elizabeth Collar Clark of Lexington, KY; and a sister-in-law Susan Barnes Collar of Leesburg, FL. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Virginia Fraser Taylor (Chuck) of Tiger, GA; Jonathan Smith of Athens, GA; Olivia Nettles Hatcher (Mark), Susan Clark Nettles, both of Macon; and George E. Nettles, III (Rachel) of Carbondale, CO; she was predeceased by her grandson Peter Smith. She also left six great grandchildren, a great-great granddaughter, many nieces and nephews, and dear friends. The family will receive friends from 1:00pm to 2:30pm Wednesday at AS Turner & Sons, North Decatur Road, prior to a private family interment service. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in her memory to the Altar Guild at Glenn Memorial Methodist Church or the Salvation Army. A.S. Turner & Sons Decatur.
