Joyce was born in Peru, Ill., to Louis and Helen Norwich Marfell. She was the oldest of two children born to the couple. Joyce attended Peru public grade schools and played clarinet in the grade school band. After attending LP High School, she became a telephone operator for Illinois Bell in LaSalle, Ill. In 1952, she won the "Miss Voice Contest" for the LaSalle, Peru, and Oglesby area. She had been chosen from 100 contestants as "the girl most nearly meeting all the qualities of the Voice with a Smile."
On June 26, 1954, Joyce married Eddie Ochs. They settled in LaSalle and Joyce left her job to raise their two children. She eventually returned to work as a receptionist at the local Motel 6 and then as a salesperson at a clothing store in the Peru Mall before retiring for good.
She passed away at St. Margaret's Hospital in Spring Valley from complications after a surgery.
